At Whitley Bay Islamic Cultural Centre (WBICC), we’re very happy to see our women’s swimming sessions at Tynemouth Pool still going strong. What started with a small group a few years ago has now become a regular and much-loved activity for many women in our community.
Every Saturday from 1:15pm to 2:15pm, around 50 women take part in the sessions. The pool is closed to men during this time, which creates a safe and comfortable space for women to swim, exercise, and relax.
We recently asked our swimmers for feedback, and the results were amazing. On average, women rated the sessions 9.6 out of 10. Most of the ladies are aged 36 and above, but we also have younger women in their 20s and 30s joining in. Every single person said they want the sessions to continue for another year.
Many women told us how special it feels to have a space like this in the North East. Some even travel from other areas because there’s nothing else like it nearby.
Over half of the women said they would be interested in lifeguard training if funding became available. Many also said they have friends who don’t yet swim but would love to join learn-to-swim classes if we could offer them.
These sessions are run with the help of Body Benefits and Active North Tyneside, and we’d like to give a big thank you to Tynemouth Pool for their support and kindness in helping us make this happen.
The swimming sessions are not just about fitness — they’re about friendship, confidence, and community. It’s wonderful to see so many women supporting each other and enjoying this time together.
